The recognition of the role of subjectivity in the production of knowledge has encouraged a number of feminists to reconsider the standards of objectivity while avoiding radical relativism. These studies pertain to “feminist epistemologies” which, although encompassing heterogeneous approaches, all challenge a theory of knowledge that ignores the context of the knowing subject. This article aims, within this framework, to understand how various “standpoint” epistemological postures try to reconcile a feminist political commitment with some criteria of objectivity. In particular, it analyzes the conditions under which subjectivity can be regarded as a resource, and not as an obstacle, for the production of scientific knowledge.
