Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This paper addresses the way in which ideology, through the notion of thema, generates social representations of the same object. Using the Basic Cognitive Schemas (BCS) model and the values “liberty” and “equality,” this paper identifies the structure and content of representations of democracy formed by the thema “real” vs. “ideal.” Furthermore, in order to uncover any historical and cultural reasons for the organizations, this paper systematically compares the BCS questionnaire in Brazilian and French students. This comparison demonstrates symmetries and asymmetries that are independent of any sociohistorical roots.
