The Object Relation in Alcoholism: Comparative Projective Study of Chronic and Intermittent Alcoholism

"The fragility of object relations is well known in alcoholism. It falls into a borderline register and sometimes even the fusional register. This paper discusses an analysis of chronic and intermittent alcoholics’ Rorschach and TAT productions. The genital stage is difficult to address; anaclitic and narcissistic relations are highlighted and underscored by the necessity “to be like everybody else.” However, chronic alcoholics’ relation would lean on the “same” search; intermittent alcoholics’ relation would rest on a particularistic “request.” In addition, intermittent ones tried to approach the genital issue, without reaching it really due to being caught up in regressive movements. Beyond these peculiarities, this work allows us to introduce reflection on the projective method’s impact."
