L’œuvre d’Orlan se construit tout entière autour d’un matériau unique qu’elle semble ne jamais pouvoir épuiser : l’image de son corps féminin. Un véritable franchissement s’opère avec ses opérations-performances, signant le passage d’une logique de dévoilement de l’image du corps de la femme à une logique de dépouillement. Sans réduire la portée politique de sa démarche artistique, cette bascule de et dans la mascarade sera lue comme un mode de traitement singulier du féminin par la mise en image d’un processus infini d’auto-engendrement.

Between Art and Politics – A Study of the Swinging Pendulum of Female Masquerading in the Work of Orlan. The work of Orlan is entirely constructed from a single form of seemingly inexhaustible material – the female body. Her procedures-cum-performances are a veritable means of surpassing boundaries, thereby signalling the transition from the logics of unmasking the image of the female form to the logics of bareness. Without in any way wishing to reduce the political clout of her artistic processes, this back and forth movement, swinging into and out of masquerade, may be read as a unique means of approaching femininity by setting an unbounded process of self-engenderment into images.
