The Strange Doubling of the Gallic Ransom and the Trial of Manlius Capitolinus
Type de matériel :

When the Gauls seized Rome, the possibility that Manlius reduced the weight of the pound provides an explanation for three historical facts. First, while the amount of the ransom was reportedly a thousand pounds, it was revealed in 52 BC that the gold deposited in the Capitol had mysteriously doubled. Secondly, the quarrel between Brennus and the Romans during the transaction is a sign that the pound had not the same value for each side. Third, the charges against Manlius Capitolinus and the support he received from the debtors can be explained by this devaluation.
