When psychoanalysis meets human augmentation

Humans are currently undergoing a series of major changes driven by the emergence of new technological and biotechnological devices that enable “self-repair” or “self-augmentation”. The increasing development of technoscientific understanding has led to the constant improvement of these devices. As a result, it is now possible to connect or implant, more or less invasively, a series of electronic micro-components and aesthetic or bionic prostheses to serve this purpose. What’s more, this new human condition goes hand in hand with an ambition for anthropological change spearheaded by the “transhumanist” movement. This ideological school of thought heralds the dawn of a new era culminating in the transformation of human reality. This is an area of real interest for psychoanalysis as these innovative experiences that form the cornerstone of this new Promethean ideal bring fundamental questions back to the fore. This text presents the pursuit and reinforcement of the reinterpretation of psychoanalytic input in the context of contemporary issues linked to new technologies and biotechnologies, and of its subjective effects in a clinical setting.
