The Caregiver and Narcissistic Identification in Psychic Care Work

In this article, the author develops his thought around what he calls the « malaise in psychiatry ». Generally unconscious and practically automatic, the basic narcissistic identification of caregivers with their patients is a fundamental element to any therapeutic action. The caregiver is under a form of “acted penetration” in his relationship with patients under extreme narcissistic identification sufferings. However, certain defences against this identification may stop it from being usable in the care, or even hinder the caring capacities. The author also insists on the necessity of a third party, which can take on various forms, in this relationship. But in this case, how may we identify without confusion ?
