Serial Reproduction of an Odorous Material: From the Smelling of an Odor to the Collective Reconstruction of its Memory

The aim of this article is to investigate the socially constructed dimension of olfactory memory. The research explores how Bartlett’s (1932) theoretical and empirical work on memory allows us to give a systematic account of the processes involved in the collective construction of the memory of an odor. We applied the serial reproduction technique to two different odors, in nine groups of four participants each (N=36). Results show that the hypothetical source of the odor is a central element in the collective process of reconstructing the memory of the odor. Results demonstrated that the gradual reconstruction of the olfactory memory involved omissions, transpositions, and a progressive bringing together of the components that compose it.
