Integrating the Loire-Atlantique region into the Brittany region during the 2015 territorial reform? An analysis through the media’s geopolitics

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2023. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : In 2015, the NOTRe law modified the boundaries of the regions of metropolitan France. During the debates that preceded the vote on the law, there was a resurgence of mobilisation in the West in favour of the integration of the Loire-Atlantique department into the region of Brittany. In this article, we study the way in which the regional press presented this geopolitical dispute over the boundaries of the region of Brittany, in particular by comparing it to the national press. Based on interviews with journalists and a qualitative and content analysis of three regional newspapers, Le Télégramme, Ouest-France and Presse Océan, we ask whether the regional press was content to report on the debates and events related to the territorial reform or whether it was an actor of the geopolitical fact. Although the journalists stated that they were not prescribers in the debates on “reunification”, the analysis of the press corpus nuances this idea. Ouest-France and Le Télégramme are particularly committed to “reunification”, which they legitimise, among other things, by evoking the Breton identity linked to a region of five. Although the newspapers are not openly regionalist, they contribute to spreading the idea that Breton identity is a commonplace, without really defining it.
