Point de départ d’une controverse historiographique durable, le livre de François Furet et Denis Richet La Révolution française constitue une étape importante de l’évolution de l’historiographie de la Révolution française au cours de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle. Il s’agit ici non pas d’interroger le discours du Furet/Richet sur la Révolution française, dont on rappellera simplement les arguments les plus significatifs, mais plutôt la nature des réactions qu’il a suscitées. Notre approche de la réception du livre se fonde sur l’étude des nombreux comptes rendus dont il a fait l’objet. L’enjeu est de réfléchir à la façon dont la controverse se déclenche, se développe et s’épuise. En abordant successivement l’étude de la réception immédiate du livre d’un part, puis l’étude des effets de cette réception dans l’histoire de l’historiographie d’autre part, nous verrons comment François Furet a utilisé « l’effet controverse » pour affirmer, dans le paysage historiographique, sa différence face à l’interprétation alors dominante incarnée par Albert Soboul.

The point of departure of an historiographie and enduring controversy, the book by Francois Furet and Denis Richet, La Révolution française, constitutes an important stage in the evolution of the historiography on the French Revolution during the second half of the twentieth century. It is not a question in this article of examining the vision of Furet/Richet offered of the French Revolution, whose main arguments are only briefly touched on, but rather of considering the nature of the reactions it provoked. My approach to the study of the reception of the book is based on a analysis of numerous reviews of the work. What is significant here is to reflect on the way in which the controversy was sparked off, developed and subsided. By discussing the immediate reception of the work, then looking at the effects of this reception in the history of the historiography, one can see how François Furet used the controversy to affirm in a transitional period in the historiography his divergent position compared with the dominant interpretation then incarnated in the personality and works of Albert Soboul.
