La maternité est une étape maturative, riche en réaménagements psychiques et en productions fantasmatiques. Les fantasmes serviront de terreau pour la structuration des nouvelles identités de la famille. Comme dans un conte de fée, la femme enceinte rêve et retrouve le pays merveilleux de l’enfance au cours d’un voyage nécessaire vers le passé. Croyances magiques et théories infantiles s’actualisent à partir de tous ces remous, et grâce à eux, le petit homme va naître en reposant la question essentielle pour la famille et pour l’humanité : la nécessité de se soumettre à l’interdit de l’inceste pour sortir du chaos et mettre en place l’œdipe. Dans les cas de traumatismes non élaborés, les fantasmes sont violents. La femme reste ensorcelée par le temps d’autrefois et la maternité est un véritable cauchemar. La rencontre avec l’enfant se construira dans une « parentalité confuse ». L’enfant qui n’aura pas sa place pourra se retrouver à son tour, dans la confusion des générations ou dans la confusion des identités sexuelles.
