Institutional conflicts are very common in the analytic world, especially in France, where there has been a proliferation of splits. The question arises as to whether or not psychoanalysts are entitled to explore the original sources of these conflicts: Did such tensions exist in Freud’s time? What were their origins, their nature, and their resolution? On the basis of a re-reading of The History of the Psychoanalytic Movement, we will bring to light a Freudian personal myth that seems to have marked the birth of psychoanalysis and future political relations between psychoanalysts.
