Objective The objective of this study was to survey nurses and patients on the need to address sexual health as part of therapeutic patient education (TPE). Method First, a qualitative study was conducted among nurses in the form of a focus group. Second, semi-structured interviews were led with 14 rheumatoid arthritis or spondyloarthritis patients. Results An analysis of verbatim transcripts of focus group discussions revealed five themes: the absence of any obligation to address the subject, barriers, a lack of dedicated training, organizational difficulties related to TPE, and practical concerns on how to broach the issue. All but 1 patient agreed to discuss the issue. Over half of the patients reported that the disease had impacted their sexual health. Conclusion This study highlights barriers encountered by nurses. Health care professionals need better training to address these subjects. Practical implications To improve care in sexual health, better training for professionals is required. It appears to be easier to address the topic of sexuality alongside other social, family, and “psychological” issues. Dialogue and understanding appear to be important factors within the couple to ensure sexual satisfaction. It appears to be important to consider the role of the partner in therapeutic patient education.
