Deindustrialization, along with the emergence of digital technologies, are challenging the design discipline. Light could be shed on the induced mutations by setting side by side the influence of postmodernity on design and the impact of modern times on the fine arts. Acknowledging the increasing economic importance of the new information and communication technology and the singularity of work with calculated or service-based materials, we observe an expansion of the design disciplines in two directions. The first one is an increased adherence to the “Agile” development methodologies, the second one is located within project spaces, where challenges are to be found less in the defining of forms than in facilitating their emergence.
