The “Dental Scene” in Training Groups for Dentists

This article is by a team of clinician-teachers of odontology and of psychology (mainly psychoanalysts). It focuses on the creation of talking group sessions for future dental surgeons in their 4th year of university training in order to explore the aspects of stress and anxiety in the dentist/patient relationship. Nine groups of a dozen of students were led by six psychologists. Participants were made aware of transference-counter transference processes through different “dental scenarios.” The group had a mediator role between the reality of hospital work and of the professor-student relationship, and the subjective experience of this situation and the imaginary dimension. While many resistances were observed in these groups, they echoed the issues of narcissism or problems of professional identity, identification, or unconscious resonances with childhood experiences and fantasies. The “dental scenarios” brought out the real and the imaginary (current or infantile) aspects of this experiment.
