A review of some aspects of the controversy suggests that the obstacles may be to a large extent of a theoretical nature, pertaining to the definition of psychotherapy and of psychoanalysis, as well as to the integration of non-verbal material in the psychoanalytic process. A redefinition of the psychoanalytic process is suggested in order to promote clinical discussion as well as basic research.
