Bereaving a parent in early childhood: What are the repercussions for the young adult?

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2023. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Bereaving a parent in childhood has long been recognized as a factor conducive to mental pathology in adulthood, but few studies have addressed the long-term impact of early bereavement on psychological experience and emotional functioning, even in the absence of a confirmed mental disorder. We studied this impact in seven young adults, aged between eighteen and twenty-five years, whose parent died of cancer when they were between two and five years old, and who had no ongoing mental disorder at the time of the interview. A semi-structured interview with each of the participants was used to explore their experience of parental bereavement, their emotional relationships, and their emotional regulation strategies. We also used four standardized assessment tools to evaluate the repercussions of the childhood bereavement, the traumatic impact, the anxiety-depression elements, and the difficulties of emotional regulation. The results reveal in each of the subjects the imprint of a deep suffering, expressed by a mosaic of clinical elements, through which the loss appears as an organizing element of both the psyche and the family system. But they also reveal elements of resilience, a major factor of which is the available relational support, which opens up avenues for the early assistance of children experiencing such bereavement.
