This paper analyzes the way in which Colombian journalists establish and stage “discursive borders” (reported speech, factual and descriptive style, “neutral” lexicon, etc.) to distance themselves from the war lexicon of armed groups. While quantitative analysis shows that Colombian journalists organize their discourse according to a rhetoric of objectivity, the qualitative results nuance this observation. Indeed, the way in which journalists engage discursive markers of distancing by attributing a polemical designation to a source, and the way discourse is reported sometimes reflects the influence of interests by one of the parties to the conflict.
