Voting behavior in France’s banlieues has long been of interest to French social science researchers, and more particularly to political scientists. The aim of this paper is to examine how theoretical approaches, lines of inquiry, and methodologies around this topic have evolved since the 1960s. The article distinguishes between different phases in the literature as research perspectives have shifted, from initial studies on the local entrenchment of left-wing political parties, to the study of abstention and support for the Far Right, to more recent research on migrant populations and new voters in the low-rise suburbs.
