The Earth Summit, which was held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, brought the concept of sustainable development into the limelight. Yet, the contradictory relationships between development and environment are tied to the difficult relationships between economy and ecology. The rush of the now totally globalized economy into boundless accumulation and competition eliminates the concern for the oikos, the environmental or cultural aspects that could contribute to escaping from commercialization and the logic of profit. In fact, the concept of sustainable development is only the latest attempt to mask the negative sides of economic growth.
