Aesthetic Experience, Containment, and Transformation

Embarking upon a subject as vast and inexhaustible as the aesthetic experience, containment and transformation necessitate the choice of an approach which is inevitably reductionist. In this study, the main focus is the transformation of archaic anxieties, while being supported by the creative processes in an artistic sense on the one hand, and on the inspirational work of psychoanalysis on the other. Numerous examples in the personal lives of great artists support the hypotheses about the birth of works of art and their role as narcissistic support. Clinical examples illustrate the role of artistic activities in the approach to and treatment of serious personality disorders in young children and particularly in very young autistic children.
