Sedentariness and Mobility in Ancien Régime Rural Society

Should we be forced to choose between equally caricatural views of Ancien Régime village societies, either as almost entirely self-sufficient and totally closed communities, or as sieve-like way-stations in a world of global mobility? In response to a paper by Alain Croix published in this journal in 1991, the author argues that the concepts of rootedness, sedentariness, and endogamy are neither equivalent nor irreconcilable with those of mobility and openness. Rather, they should be combined to describe a diverse and changing reality.
