Is the well-being of Ivorian children dependent on the social, economic and symbolical status of Ivorian Women? Heuristic virtues of methodological pluralism

Based on the example of Côte d’Ivoire, this article proposes a measure of the status of women and looks at its relationship with the well-being of children (proxied by their educational opportunities and their exposure to work or hazardous child labour). It is based on a specific methodological pluralism combining quantitative methods used in development economics and the qualitative contributions of field studies by anthropologists, historians, and demographers. This article shows that a better social, symbolic and economic position of women reduce gender inequalities in school attendance but do not decrease their vulnerability to (hazardous) child labour.
