Behind the scenes of vocational training: The selection process upon starting an apprenticeship

The selection process that is applied to apprenticeship admissions brings to light the existence of a gray zone—the transition between school and entry into vocational training. As in-school training is increasingly being devalued in favor of learning while working, entry into apprenticeships has become very selective. Using a longitudinal analysis, this article reveals the inequality of access to this type of program: far from accepting those students left behind by schools, apprenticeships introduce a new barrier even before training begins.
