While the risk of death constitutes a definite psychological trauma for patients in an intensive care unit, families are also likely to experience traumatic bereavement when death occurs. As for caregivers, they are faced with a constant risk of traumatic death, although they are not always aware of it. Drawing on her clinical experience, the author of this article analyzes the psychic issues at play in death, mourning, and the support needed to avoid their traumatic effects as much as possible.
