Borderless Berlin?

Berlin, the “visiting card” of a reunified Germany, inspired with a European vocation, sees itself as embodying the myth of modernity! Being at once Europe’s historical conscience and a model of multiculturality, the project for a “New Berlin” is an opportunity for urban planners and politicians to erase references to an uncomfortable past and to give life to a revised version of Germany’s image and of democracy. In the light of this paradox we study the reconstruction of spaces along the track of the former Wall or in its shadow: the symbolic dimension of the choice of sites, of buildings and of materials used as well as the procedures followed when making such choices, without however neglecting the social dimension of the urban configuration thus produced. This giant construction yard tells us about the world of tomorrow towards which Berlin is moving.
