Women with disabilities on Instagram: appropriation and monetization of self-narratives

We examine how five Italian influencers with disabilities appropriate Instagram, portraying their bodies at a time when the Italian government has shown a surprising level of concern about disabilities and ableism. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis of a corpus of photographs and captions shared online, we show that despite differences in approach, the five influencers share a common desire to challenge the mainstream narrative about bodies on Instagram and bodies in Italy.
