Falling in love in adolescence provides the model of feelings which can also occur in later life. The author shows that the characteristics are the same as in adolescence and proposes to uncover others characteristics which would illuminate some little known aspects of love relations. Except on the cases of narcissistic pathology or masochistic repetition, a deep intimacy is created through a shared feeling of insecurity related to the aging process and the passage of time, and also by sharing an internal world with the partner through the knowledge of his or her past. This intimacy allows more sexual freedom integrating polymorphous perverse infantile elements. By theorizing the activity of the œdipal constellation throughout the life, the author shows the progression that brings the woman towards sexual maturity and the man towards a deeper object relation. The ideal situation which is described brings out potentialities which run counter the conventional idea that passionate love becomes unlikely with age and allow better understanding of psychopathology of patients in their love life.
