Caring for Oneself, Caring for Another in the Aging Process

The identity oriented mental work-out related to aging cannot be seen as a simple cognitive activity to the extent that the share of the imaginary, of dreams and unreasoned apprehensions is inherent to the subjectivation processes involved. This partly involves a work-out of incorporations and identifications with imaginary figures and models, to partially realise one’s ideals and renew them. Perception of one’s aging finds itself intertwined with unconscious alliances and evolution in the narcissistic pact, with the idea of its belonging to the human condition. “I shall be what survives me. ” Identificatory compromises are based on notions of time and making pacts with others. Andersen’s Travel Companion is a symbolisation of this identity oriented work-out faced with the approach of death.
