The author examines the effects of embarking on early medicalmanagement of intersex babies, specifically those who will go onto be assigned as female, in terms of their identity and sexual lifein adulthood. Having identified the challenges from the medical point of viewin terms of care in the perinatal period, the author considers thisposition as a defensive response on the part of physicians in theface of a loss of clear points of reference for establishing one sexas different from the other, overturned by such singular situations. The author turns to the Laplanchian model of gender assignment/ translation, and the conception of the body as defined by Christophe Dejours to explore the effects of such medical interventionon the genesis of the erotic body of these babies when theybecome grown women.
