Poiesis and poesis: “Writing with” and “writing against” digital tools

In this paper, Étienne Candel uses the words “poiesis” and “poesis” to distinguish between two aspects of creative writing, the first being the actual practices and uses of digital apparatuses, the second being the social reception of texts and their acknowledgement as literature, poetry, art, or something else. These categories allow him to analyze his own writing practices—namely his “ironèmes” (mainly on Twitter) and his “trashtexts” (on Instagram)—by questioning on which bases these texts are composed and the frames of their social reception. Thus, he tries to articulate the internal and external approaches to texts in a global pragmatic vision of literary phenomena.
