Protecting the “critical” humanities and social sciences

The humanities and social sciences have a critical and emancipatory dimension that constitutes a major cultural phenomenon throughout the world. However, this tradition of knowledge is fragile, and it is threatened by three types of phenomena: anti-intellectualist attacks; authoritarian regimes and dictatorships; and structural transformations induced by utilitarianism, management, and the market. We call for an international collective to consider the patrimonialization of the humanities and social sciences within the framework of international conventions.
