Anne-Marie Houdebine, a psychoanalyst and emeritus professor of linguistics and semiology, developed the theoretical framework of the linguistic imaginary by focusing on the “ sexuation” or construction of sex difference revealed through the uses and attitudes of speakers. She was a member of France’s official Commission for the Terminology and Feminization of Jobs, Titles, and Functions, and wrote the text of its 1986 memorandum. She has also developed the theoretical and methodological approach of the semiology of indices and the concept of the cultural imaginary by focusing on the issue of sex difference from a critical perspective, analyzing discourse, advertising, and sociocultural practices. This interview focuses on the links between semiology, its critical praxis, and the act of deconstruction present in the analysis of the construction of sex difference in language and speech.
