Translation: A vital activity for the child

The successful process of primary socialization is a major political issue. The author hypothesizes that children need to develop their ability to translate between the social and family worlds so as to be able to harmoniously incorporate the “strange” parts of speech addressed to them. The article reports on the initial and progressive situations of two children aged 5 and 17 months encountered in a medical consultation and subjected to a rather confused and incoherent maternal speech. Maternal speech as well as the author’s countertransference are analyzed, using a clinical, psychoanalytical approach in educational sciences, so as to highlight the way the children have worked to translate their mother’s speech. A potential link between translating activity and traumatic context is also questioned. Referring to Piera Aulagnier’s works, the way the terms of the “narcissistic contract” seem to be respected in the reported case is brought out. Furthermore, it is pointed out that Aulagnier’s conception might also be efficient to ensure respectful professional support for children and their families.
