This article is based on fieldwork in a port that serves as a border between France and United Kingdom. The article focuses on the double process of border privatization and securitization whilst pointing to the emergence of new border jobs. The enquiry focuses on port agents and security agents, with the aim of understanding how private workers deal with delegated public functions, namely border control. The article demonstrates how these “low-level international professionals,” positioned between the public and private sector, appropriate or reject these new functions, how much leeway they manage to negotiate, and in short, how they construct the border on a daily basis.
