For Hitler and the active members of the Nazi Party, the excavations carried out at Olympia on the eve and in the aftermath of the 1936 Olympic Games were primarily aimed at historically appropriating the renowned ancient site and celebrating the Hellenic-Germanic relationship—the Greeks being, for Nazis, descendants of the Aryans. Numerous publications devoted to these excavations were disseminated in Germany between 1936 and 1945, although their scientific impact was very limited.
