This article draws on ethnographical fieldwork conducted in robotics laboratories and in spaces in France for the socialisation of robots. It explores questions related to the context in which photographs are taken, the framing, and types of take, which depend both on the technologies and the different forms of interaction between machines and humans. The article considers the parties involved and the subjects of the snapshots produced by the different actors found in robotics laboratories, with the aim of highlighting the space taken up in the visual frame by the technical environments and by humans. Depending on whether they are excluded from the photo, or in the foreground, they reveal a message about the role of robots in society (as autonomous machines or as the fruits of human labour). These lines of enquiry thus also lead to a reflection on the importance and limits of the technique of ethnographic photography and on the specific ways it needs to be adapted in a high-tech context such as robotics, in order to retain its value as a heuristic tool.

‪Cet article se fonde sur des terrains ethnographiques menés dans des laboratoires de robotique et dans des espaces de socialisation des robots en France. Il s’intéresse au problème des conditions de la prise de photographies, du cadrage et des modalités de la prise de vue qui dépendent à la fois des technologies et des formes que prennent les interactions entre machines et humains. En s’intéressant aux acteurs et motifs des clichés réalisés par les différents acteurs qui fréquentent les laboratoires de robotique, il s’agira de souligner la place qu’occupent les environnements techniques et humains dans le dispositif visuel : selon qu‪‪’‪‪ils sont exclus ou au premier rang de la photo, ils d‪‪é‪‪voilent un message sur la place des robots en soci‪‪é‪‪t‪‪é‪ (comme machines autonomes ou comme produits de l‪’œ‪‪uvre humaine). Ces lignes de d‪é‪‪veloppement nourriront ainsi une r‪é‪flexion sur la port‪‪ée et les limites de la technique de la photographie ethnographique et sur les adaptations particuli‪è‪‪res qu‪’‪‪elle doit consentir, dans un contexte de high-tech comme celui de la robotique, pour demeurer un outil à finalité heuristique.‪
