RésuméDans cet article, nous mettons en évidence un aspect négligé de la pensée politique de Schumpeter : la dimension cognitive. Celle-ci fonde à la fois la critique de l’idéal démocratique et la construction d’un modèle alternatif de démocratie. En s’appuyant sur un concept plus large de rationalité et en soulignant l’importance de la dimension subjective des représentations, Schumpeter est conduit à élargir les motifs de la décision et du comportement des acteurs politiques et à reconsidérer les modalités de la formation des choix publics. Néanmoins, si ces nouvelles hypothèses offrent des pistes intéressantes, la théorie politique de Schumpeter n’en demeure pas moins inachevée.

In this paper, we put forward a neglected aspect of Schumpeter’s political thought : the cognitive dimension. This one founds both the criticism of the democratic ideal and the construction of an alternative theory of democracy. Insisting on a wider concept of rationality and on the importance of the subjective dimension of individual representations, Schumpeter is led to extend the motives of the decisions and behaviours of the political agents and to reconsider the conditions under which public choices can be made. Nevertheless, if these new assumptions offer interesting perspectives, the political theory of Schumpeter remains uncompleted. Classification JEL: B250
