Far from being only a novelist, Manzoni deals all along his account of the great Milanese plague with the nature of belief, superstition and public hysteria. Those are very actual questions. He illustrates in a vivid way the strength of prejudice and raises the issue of a knowledge free from the weight of common belief. This entails also the issue of political freedom, which cannot be equated with “laissez-faire”.
