Les droits de la veuve d’un artiste plasticien, qui touchent notamment la conservation et l’authentification des œuvres, leur vente ou leur don, font d’elle une actrice incontournable dans la valorisation posthume de l’œuvre ; mais également marginalisée, dans un champ artistique en pleine professionnalisation, et oubliée par une histoire de l’art davantage préoccupée de création et de patrimoine. L’étude des cas de Sonia Delaunay, Nina Kandinsky, Jeanne Kosnick-Kloss et Nelly van Doesburg, qui ont en commun d’avoir chacune été la compagne d’un artiste abstrait décédé avant 1945, permet de montrer à la fois leur importante (quoique inégale) présence médiatique et leur capacité à faire valoir lors de leurs interventions publiques leurs propres efforts pour promouvoir et patrimonialiser l’œuvre de leur conjoint défunt.

Artist’s Widows: Witness, “Muses”, Experts (19th-20th century) and the Beginning of the 20th CenturyThe rights of an artist’s widow, regarding the preservation and authentification of the art works, their sale and donation, make her a key actress in the posthumous valorization of the work ; but also a marginalized one, in an art sector where professionalism grows, as well as forgotten by an art history more interested with creation and heritage. The cases of Sonia Delaunay, Nina Kandinsky, Jeanne Kosnick-Kloss and Nelly van Doesburg, who have in common to have been the companion of an abstract artist deaceased before 1945, allow us to show both how important (although uneven) their media presence was and how they tried and used these shows to shed light on their own efforts to promote and patrimonialize the work of their late companion.
