Summary, etc. Comment retrouver l’université et ses missions réelles dans un contexte néolibéral où l’enseignement supérieur et la recherche sont devenus « un secteur du marché » parmi d’autres ? La communauté universitaire d’Aberdeen a relevé ce défi en renouant avec son histoire et sa charte originelle, mentionnant que l’université est ouverte à tous et au service de tous dans sa recherche de la vérité. Ont ainsi été mis au jour quatre piliers fondateurs : la liberté, non comme propriété mais comme exigence ; la confiance, non comme confort mais comme responsabilité mutuelle ; l’éducation, non comme résultats chiffrés à obtenir, mais comme processus ouvert de croissance et de découverte ; et enfin la communauté, non comme groupe homogène et fermé mais comme rassemblement dans la différence et comme concentré de la vie sociale elle-même.

Aberdeen’s university community has taken up this challenge by rediscovering its history and its original charter, which states that, in its search for truth, the university is both open to all and at the service of all. Four founding pillars have thus emerged: academic freedom, seen not as an individual privilege but as a necessary condition of research; trust understood not as a luxury but as mutual responsibility; education, not as a mere quantifiable result to be achieved, but as an open process of growth and discovery; and finally community, not as a homogeneous and closed group, but as a gathering in difference and as the focus of social life itself.
