| Summary, etc. | Dans sa fiction, Kaye Gibbons, romancière de Caroline du Nord, ne défriche pas de grands espaces mais retrace l'itinéraire des femmes du Sud en quête de territoire. Dans Sights Unseen, la narratrice Hattie essaie d'explorer le paysage mental sauvage et chaotique de sa mère Maggie, qui souffre de troubles bipolaires. Cet état maniaco-dépressif traduit le poids de la tradition sudiste, incarnée par le grand-père, qui clôture l'espace féminin. Kaye Gibbons s'efforce de le reconquérir grâce à un style sobre et dépouillé, mais aussi grâce à des stratégies narratives puisées dans la tradition orale du Sud, également source de comique. Cet article souligne aussi l'ambivalence de la guérison de la mère, car la femme " mystérique " qui a défié le phallocentrisme sudiste ou/et s'est pliée à ses lois est finalement domptée et soumise. Ce lien ambivalent entre guérison et soumission traduit l'ambivalence, voire la bipolarité, de l'écriture de Kaye Gibbons qui s'inspire toujours de la tradition sudiste alors qu'elle souhaite s'affranchir du discours patriarcal. |

| Summary, etc. | In Sights Unseen, a female narrator, Hattie, tries to probe into the unfathomable mental landscape of her mother, Maggie, who suffers from manic depression, perceived as the consequence of women’s repression in the traditional South. This paper points to Gibbons’s (re)conquest of women’s devastated mental space through stylistic simplicity and narrative strategies inspired by Southern humour and story-telling. It also highlights the ambivalence of the mother’s recovery, since the “mysterical” woman who both challenged and/or complied with Southern phallocentrism is finally tamed and subdued. Such an ambivalent association of healing with submission testifies to the ambivalence—the bipolarity—of Kaye Gibbons’s writing which does not break away from Southern tradition although she advocates liberation from patriarchal discourse. |
