Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Anno 5. regni sui a Frixonibus occiditur in glacie. Perceptions of the Pathetic Death of William, Count of Holland and King of the Romans (1256)In 1256, during the campaign he was successfully leading against the western Frisians,William II, count of Holland and king of the Romans, galloped across a frozen lake ; his horse fell through the ice and the chivalrous monarch was viciously put to death by a group of peasants. This episode, far beyond the obvious rash of propaganda that it caused in Holland, raised the interest of numerous western chroniclers, who seized this opportunity to brand a people whose habits were reputed as barbarous, to bemoan such a stroke of fate, and to mourn both the Empire’s eclipse and the frailty inherent to the royal condition. For them, the event conjured up both a prelude to the Great Interregnum and a renewed form of memento mori. |
