520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Murray Bookchin (1921-2006), the most anarchist of environmentalists and the most environmentalist of anarchists, a foundry worker and self-taught theorist, endeavored in his life and work to reconcile social justice with the protection of nature. His book Our Synthetic Environment (1962), which placed environmental issues in their economic and political context, was totally overshadowed by the publication six months later of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. His social ecology and communalist project opened up new perspectives for the environmental movement. Bookchin anchored political ecology within libertarian socialism, while reminding us that no society can live without a minimum of rules. Rejecting all dogmatism, he justifies the participation of anarchists in municipal councils, subject to certain conditions. On the animal question, he dismisses biocentrism, which makes all forms of life interchangeable, and anthropocentrism, which places humanity at the top of a stratified pyramid.
