Summary, etc. | The theoretical work of D.W. Winnicott (1896-1971). An English paediatrician, he served his apprenticeship during the war and became interested in early mental disorders, psychoses and borderline pathologies. He described a transitional space that lasts from birth to around the age of 18 months, where mother and child together develop a symbolic object that enables them to separate. Incidents that occur during this early period may be experienced by the child as sensations of falling into the void, like Alice in Alice in Wonderland. |
