520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | The “ tabib” healers, a new category of health-care practitioner in post-Soviet Uzbekistan ? This article aims to show how the Soviet heritage and the new political, economic and social conditions that prevail in now-independent Uzbekistan have induced the emergence of a particular category of health-care practitioner : the “ tabib” healer. The emergence of these traditional health-care provider in Uzbekistan is an element in a singular political context. The Uzbek powers are seeking to institutionalize traditional medicine by mobilizing a whole body of traditions and representations that carry strong identity-related significance, at the time when the public health system is attempting to live on what it had acquired under the Soviet regime. Examination of the relation between these practitioners, the powers and individuals will shed light on the continuities which do not necessarily appear clearly related to the social role of traditional medicine, but also to the autonomy of certain ways of functioning that remains in spite of Uzbekistan’s long integration in the Soviet sphere. |
