| Summary, etc. | Cet article repose sur une enquête ethnographique portant sur l’élevage de pigeons à Amman. La colombophilie – « kashsh hamâm » en arabe – constitue un loisir particulièrement apprécié dans la société jordanienne. Il suffit pour le comprendre de passer une matinée au milieu de la foule réunie pour le marché aux pigeons qui se tient chaque vendredi dans le centre-ville. L’expérience permet d’un même coup de constater que ces oiseaux sont une affaire d’hommes. Ce texte décrit la manière dont s’organisent les activités colombophiles à Amman, à travers les relations et jeux dans lesquels les pigeons sont investis, et questionne en termes de rapports sociaux de sexe les figures et sociabilités masculines qui y sont associées. Car ce ne sont pas seulement des pigeons que se disputent les kashshâsh mais des représentations sociales associées à leur passion : des histoires de dignité et de mépris, de bonnes et de mauvaises fréquentations. . |

| Summary, etc. | This article is based on ethnographic fieldwork about pigeon keeping in Amman. Pigeon racing – ‘kashsh hamâm’ in Arabic – is a particularly popular hobby in Jordanian society. One only has to spend a morning in the midst of the weekly pigeon market to appreciate this–and that pigeons are men’s business. In this article, I describe the ways pigeon fancier activities are organized in Amman, and analyse the gendered figures associated with them. I show that pigeon racing is a matter of distinction within the working classes, linked to models of masculinity of varying value. |
