| Summary, etc. | Children under the care of child protection services have experienced complex traumas related to neglect, mistreatment, and various forms of abuse. The authors suggest that, like their parents, these children show significant defects in their mentalization capacity and a psychic functioning characteristic of pre-mentalizing modes of thinking. This article presents an operationalization of the different pre-mentalizing modes of thinking (teleological, psychic equivalence, and pretend-mode). The underlying principles of a mentalizing intervention program used by educators who work with children in various specialized youth protection settings are also described. Finally, a preliminary study on the effectiveness of this program is briefly presented. |
