Summary, etc. Discovered during the modern era, Spitsbergen, today called Svalbard, was the object of a diplomatic dispute for over three centuries. Covered with glaciers, this archipelago cemented the rivalry between European maritime and Arctic powers and the conflict could only be ended by way of a legal agreement. How did the Spitsbergen Treaty succeed in combining the strong nationalist egotism of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with international openness, while also enabling economic and scientific activities to continue within this terra nullius?
