| Summary, etc. | Mon texte commente quelques traits d’une partie d’échecs composée par Beckett à la fin de son roman, Murphy (1935/1936), un texte qui se dérobe et se ferme à tout moment au lecteur. Par « traits », il faut entendre à la fois les caractéristiques de la partie et les coups qui y sont joués. Ce qui est ici signifiant, c’est que Beckett invente, pour cette partie d’échecs paradoxale, des stratégies d’évitement, d’empêchement, de grève (Samuel Beckett comme « peintre de l’empêchement »). Bien que les règles du jeu soient respectées par les deux joueurs jusqu’au trentième coup des Noirs, il manque à cette forme de jeu au moins trois caractéristiques indispensables du jeu d’échecs : la volonté de vaincre, l’activité, l’agressivité. Beckett crée avec son texte une « plastique de la pensée » qui s’annule elle-même (eine sich selbst aufhebende Denk-Skulptur) et qui peut faire penser au Bartleby, the Scrivener d’Herman Melville (remarque judicieuse faite par Franz Kaltenbeck). |

| Summary, etc. | The essay focuses on the moves in the game of chess at the end of Beckett’s novel, Murphy (1935-1936), a text which keeps shirking away and eluding the grasp of the reader. What is interesting is that Beckett imagines, for this paradoxical game, a series of strategies of avoidance, of impediments, of strikes (Beckett as the painter of preclusion). Even though the rules of the game are respected by both players up to the thirtieth move of the Blacks, there is a lack of three characteristics: the will to win, activity and aggressiveness. In this text, Beckett creates a ‘self-cancelling modelling of thoughts’ which can evoke, as very rightly suggested by Kaltenbeck, ‘Bartleby, the scrivener’ by Melville. |
